For anyone looking to avoid the risks discussed previously, there are a variety of options but only one real solution. The basic options:

• Isolation - Build a wall around it.
• Encapsulation - Coat it with a binder to hold the fiber and temporarily limit potential exposure to employees or tenants.
• Maintenance - Routinely survey to ensure it has not deteriorated, crumbled and become airborne, including periodic monitoring.
• Removal - Properly remove and dispose of it.

The first three are really only temporary solutions. In time all barriers will crumble caused by erosion, vandalism, unapproved renovations, or many other unforeseen problems.

Only removal provides a permanent solution. And removal, or any other abatement activity, must be done by experienced, specially trained and specially equipped crews or the effort, at best, can be a waste of time, and can very likely result in a worse situation than when you started.
